I have been a gemologist for decades and I am now retired and do this to raise funds for animal sanctuaries. My selling price is determined by what I had to pay, and it is always far below retail replacement value. The retail replacement figure is designed for bricks and mortar jewelers with high overheads. Many of my gems were purchased decades ago.
For those that request it, I can provide my signed and sealed appraisal of $800 retail replacement for an additional $5. My estimates are considered conservative, but I have no degrees or initials behind my name. For those preferring an independent appraisal, I have many better gems listed here that have been appraised by master valuer Steven Knight GG,R.M.V. , CJA-CAP.
NOTE: Supply and demand rules in true gem buying as in every other human investment.
Each earth mined gem is a unique work of art, unlike the lab produced stones that can be produced in unlimited quantities.
Some people will never understand why people buy an original work of art when they can buy a poster for next to nothing.
Earth mined gems are for those that do. Invest in quality.
Amethyst is the birth stone for those born in February. Amethyst is 9 on the moh's scale.
Amethyst is said to bring protect it's owner from drunkenness ( must confess...never worked for me! :-) The name comes from the Greek for Not Intoxicated.
It is thought that Joseph gave an amethyst to Mary as a pledge of faith, and Pope Clement wore an amethyst ring and believed that if he touched it to the boils of people with the plague, it would cure them.
In Greek legend, the wine god Bacchus, angry over an insult and determined to avenge himself, decreed the first person he should meet would be devoured by his tigers. This happened to be a beautiful maiden named Amethyst on her way to worship at the shrine of Diana. As the tigers attacked, she sought the protection of the gods and was saved by being turned into a clear, white crystal. Bacchus, regretting his cruelty, poured the juice of his grapes over the stone as an offering; giving the gem its lovely purple hue.
In reality, the purple color comes from natural earth irradiation and some iron impurities. It is a symbol of faithful love, and at some times in history was valued so much it was worth more than diamonds.
