Yellow topaz wholesales to the trade today for approx. $10 for a 1 cwt stone of very low grade quality to approx. $400 for a one carat example of extra fine quality. The price goes up to $750 per cwt. for extra fine larger examples. The retail price can be several times that, depending on the retailers markup.
The retail replacement figure is designed for bricks and mortar jewelers with high overheads. I used to supply jewelers, and bought gems in volume so I could sell to them at prices that allowed them to make a profit and still make a profit for myself. I determine my selling price here by considering what I paid to purchase, and the retail replacement value today
I have been a gemologist for decades and I am now retired and do this to raise funds for animal sanctuaries. My selling price is determined by what I had to pay, and it is always far below retail replacement value. The retail replacement figure is designed for bricks and mortar jewelers with high overheads. Many of my gems were purchased decades ago.
Topaz is generally stable to light, but prolonged exposure to heat or sunlight might cause fading in yellow-to-brown, reddish brown, or dark brown topaz. Also, please note: a slightly darker background shows off the stone best when photographing, but does tend to make the stone look darker than it is. Once set, the dark background also will do this. Any questions, please ask.
Better gems and jewelry items are kept in bank vault for security purposes and retrieving an item can cause a slight shipping delay.
All our gemstones are true gems, earth mined, not man made, hand cut, not machine cut. EXPECT FLAWS! We provide unaltered pictures of the gem for you at very high magnification. Minor inclusions in any gem are not, as some think, a bad thing. They help a gemologist determine the authenticity of a gem. Man made gems are perfect.... but they are not real earth mined gems, and can be made in the millions, and do not increase in value. The difference between an original oil and a print. Supply and demand rules. For those that do not want to settle for imitations, this is a chance to buy real gems at good prices.
My selling prices are determined by my cost. Many items were purchased decades ago when prices were considerably less.
NOTE: Supply and demand rules in true gem buying as in every other human investment.
Each earth mined gem is a unique work of art, unlike the lab produced stones that can be produced in unlimited quantities.
Some people will never understand why people buy an original work of art when they can buy a poster for next to nothing.
Earth mined gems are for those that do. Invest in quality.
Topaz is the gem stone for those born in November. It has been used as a gemstone for thousands of years. It is considered the symbol of friendship. Topaz in its natural state is a golden brown to yellow. Naturally occurring blue topaz is quite rare. , and almost all blue topaz on the market has been treated to produce that colour, as is some brown. An old English superstition says that topaz cures lunacy. (Never worked for me! :-) Topaz is the hardest of any silicate mineral, at 8 on the moh's scale.
